High Five!

Celebrating a few good things here at the Chronicles: 1) Congress (finally) repealed Don't Ask Don't Tell. As of today, we're officially willing to let gays die for their country. You kids go take a few bullets for us and who knows? someday we may even let you get married. 2) Tomorrow is the winter solstice. Those of you who live closer to the equator probably don't understand what the big deal is, but we who dwell in the not-so-much-daylight-at-this-time-of-year latitudes will be happy to see the days starting to lengthen again. By the way, I totally buy into the story of Demeter and Persephone. It's the only explanation that really makes sense. I used to sing "You Are My Sunshine" to my daughter when she was little. If someone had taken her away for six months at a time, my sunlight would have gone with her. 3) Tomorrow is also my mother's birthday. Were she still alive, she would have been 88 years old. She was a great believer in self-reliance ("'I am the captain of my ship, the master of my destiny,'" she'd quote to us.), a great disbeliever in whining ("I'd feel sorry for you, but you seem to be doing an adequate job of that on your own.") and a thorough pragmatist ("If there's something you have to do, and there's no way to get out of it, do it gracefully.") I'm trying, Mama.

  2. More sun, less sun... it's the cold weather that I don't like. In fact, it seems that each year that goes by I find I like winter less and less.

  6. High-five to you my dear friend. If only we could live in a world of acceptance.

DADT was the most RIDICULOUS piece of legislation to ever be passed. If I were in the trenches (and a straight man), I sincerely doubt I would care if the guy next to me I call my buddy, was gay and willing to take a bullet for me and our country.

The entire notion that gay people who want to serve their country and lay down their life for it is some hindrance to our overall military strength is retarded.

And don't get me started on John McCain and his orthopedic oxfords.

    Too much?

  7. I believe it's a good thing the time has come to begin the stoppage of the legal ostracization of homosexuals in the military. As a liberal minded heterosexual male with hedonistic roots, I also feel sad that so many gays have such deep and targeted hatred for anyone who is slightly homophobic. Being heterosexual is NOT something that is learned or forced upon most of us. It is the way we were born, pure and simple!

  8. I'm betting your mom made very good use of the time she did have. And yes - every extra second of sunlight is cherished and appreciated!

  9. Some days when the sun is shining I feel like I must suck every last ray out of it. Your Mom sounds like she was a heck of a lady.
    Merry Christmas Jeanne! :)
