If You Have Nothing Good to Say....

When I was a kid, my mom told us, "If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything."

Apparently, Pat Robertson's mom did not share the same message.

Yesterday on The 700 Club, he said:

When people start claiming to know the mind of God, and explaining the cosmic reasons behind great tragedies based on their own prejudices, they take a giant step across the line that separates religion from superstition.

  2. WOW...hadn't seen that. Ocean Girl is right, why question just help. We can do what we're able and pray for them.(What's the saying no use beating a dead horse to death?)

  3. "When people start claiming to know the mind of God..."

...then they probably imagine that they can supplant Him... On a purely intellectual level:

    a) How does Pat the Righteous know that the Devil exists? Has he met him, or is he just assuming that Old Nick is real, because in his feeble worldview of Good vs Evil it's necessary to have a counterpoint to God?
    b) How does Pat the Righteous know what the Haitians said to the Devil? Was he there, by any chance? And even if they did swear a pact, if there's no Devil, then they made the pact with themselves.

Incidentally, does anybody know if Robertson's ever been to the Dominican Republic? I have. Erm... It isn't prosperous.

  4. I thought this guy died. Or was that another of his ilk?
Maybe he should take the hint.

Uh-oh, I should not have said that. My mother also told me, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything."

    Sorry, Ma.

  5. Yeah, the guy makes a crack like that and then has the audacity to ask for donations. It wasn't too long ago that Robertson made the imbecilic remark claiming AIDS is God's revenge against homosexuality. Then, after 9/11, he said the terrorist attack was the result of a lack of prayer in public schools and because abortions continue to be performed, and pornography is readily available: "God Almighty is lifting his protection from us."
Give it a rest, Pat. Divine retribution is NOT what God is about. Seriously, Mr. Robertson will probably live forever because if he died, God has absolutely NO idea where He'd go with him.

  7. Oh, one or two other things, by way of comment on Robertson's, erm, flawed logic...

    a) The Revolution in Haiti took place around the turn of the 19th Century. 1791, I think. Haiti became the first country in the New World to be ruled by people of African descent. That Satan, eh, inadvertently supporting an anti-slavery movement? What a bastard.
    b) Also, Robertson has assumed that Haitians are being punished by God, when I think he might just find that Haiti is on a geographical faultline (and isn't Robertson assuming a great deal - would God even care what the Haitians had agreed with Satan?). But let's assume that God is punishing Haitians, 200 years after they entered that pact with Satan... What did San Franciscans do, to incur His wrath?

Jeez, I can't believe I'm even bothering with this. Life's too short. Robertson is a lovely guy, and I wish him a long life and happiness. There, I said it!

  8. You know I think I may have mentioned my son's father and grand mother were big 700 club watchers, telling me that God told them my daughter was getting a new heart, blah blah blah, and they also watched Jimmy Swaggert...#1 reason among many others we did not stay together...seeing that show just send me right up the wall!

  9. I was appalled to hear this last night. I can't explain to you the depth of emotion this stirred in me. How dare he? That's about all I can say.

  10. I can't get the video to work (it says it was removed by user), but I read the comments.

Sounds like he really likes the taste of his own foot.

  11. He's a dick, and was considering a run at the Presidency in the 80's- scary, ain't it? God is quite capable of speaking for Him/Her self..False prophets are easy to spot...
